Dangerous Waters

Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like parasites, chlorine, fluoride and dioxins.  Add to that the recent, although not so recent realization that there are drugs in most peoples drinking water.  How did they get there?  When we take a medication it is not absorbed 100%.  Some passes through our urine on to water treatment plants or septic systems.  Some of these drugs are hard to filter out so they end up in our rivers and lakes which is also our source for drinking water.  

 In one of the first studies in the United States to report the occurrence of drugs in drinking water, environmental engineer Glen Boyd had his students at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, sample water from the Mississippi River, a local lake, and city tap water. Their preliminary experiment targeted the pain reliever naproxen, the sex hormone estrone, and clofibric acid, a major bioactive metabolite from certain anticholesterol drugs. All three were detected at varying concentrations in most of the samples. “The big unknown,” says Boyd, “[is whether PPCPs] present a health concern now or in the future.”

But I digress many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear that drinking distilled water or purified water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous. Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of purified water in the 1970’s when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.

Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapor condensed. Reverse osmosis or purified water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking purified water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time). Fasting using purified water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.

Purified water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more purified water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Purified” water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.

The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made from purified water. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine. The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.

A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body. There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. A poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation. Meats, sugar, white flour products, fried foods, soft drinks, processed foods, alcohol, dairy products and other junk foods cause the body to become more acidic. Stress, whether mental or physical can lead to acid deposits in the body.

There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (purified water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood. The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state.  Almost without exception, people who consume purified water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies. Those who supplement their purified or distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-purified water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation.
Purified water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of purified water is a bad idea.
Alkaline ionized Water is the best possible drinking water. Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of purified or distilled water. Avoid it except in special circumstances.   You can purchase water Ionizers that can turn your tap water into Alkaline Ionized Water.  It is a well known fact that most disease hates an Alkaline Ph which is why this water is sooooo good for you.

In this post I will be providing links to evidence linking Toxins to increased incedents of various health issues.  Before someone is sufficiently motivated to take action they must be convinced that these things are real.  It isn’t enough to simply acknowledge that these threats exist or I heard something about that we must see it in more personal terms.  As parents we protect our kids from all kinds of dangers but it can be difficult to really worry about things that are unseen or cause no immidiate danger to their health.  A lot of the linked study’s show that exposures we had 10, 20 or even 30 years ago lead to increased chances of developing things like Cancer, Alzhiemers, Diabetes and many others.  So take this and internalize it, make it real in your mind hopefully this will give you incentive to take these threats serious.   Then you’ll be ready to take steps to protect not only yourself but the people you love.  We will be talking about solutions as the blog continues.

Toxins and the Human Body

The Human body is a wonderful machine it has it own way of cleansing things that are bad for our health, but this cleansing system can be eroded and overwhelmed over time with the shear volumn of toxins we take in.  This leads to increased incedents of illness and disease.  We need to be proactive with our health by decreasing the stress on our internal cleansing system.

 Nobody I know likes going to the Doctor, we certainly do not like it when we are dealing with a serious illness that may require hospital stays, surgery or worse.  Americans spent in the neighborhood of 2 Trillion dollars on healthcare last year.  Dealing with  disease already contracted can be scary and expensive.

 Changes in our diet, getting regular exercise, taking a look at the products we use to see if there could some dangers of toxins and if so is there a safer alternative.  Example although the FDA has tested plastic containers that are labeled microwave safe and these containers have been deemed safe and do not release chemicals into the food.  Here are examples of stuff that should probably not be used in preparing food in a microwave.                                 

  • Most takeout containers, water bottles, and plastic tubs or jars made to hold margarine, yogurt, whipped topping, and foods such as cream cheese, mayonnaise, and mustard are not microwave-safe.
  • Microwavable takeout dinner trays are formulated for one-time use only and will say so on the package.
  • Don’t microwave plastic storage bags or plastic bags from the grocery store.
  • Before microwaving food, be sure to vent the container: Leave the lid ajar, or lift the edge of the cover.
  • Don’t allow plastic wrap to touch food during microwaving because it may melt. Wax paper, kitchen parchment paper, or white paper towels are alternatives.
  • If you’re concerned about plastic wraps or containers in the microwave, transfer food to glass or ceramic containers labeled for microwave oven use.

Teflon coated pans are said to have to be heated past 600 degrees before they start releasing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).  In 2005, the EPA released a stating that PFOA was linked to several types of cancer, as well as birth defects and immunosuppression, in animal test subjects. Based on these findings, it’s suspected that PFOA is likely also a human carcinogen.  Since 600 degrees is well above what you would normally cook at it isn’t a glaring problem.  But, the statement that even the trace amounts of PFOA present in new Teflon-coated cookware were so minimal that they likely present no health risks to the consumer, notice the word likely.  My point here is why even have this discussion, use glass or ceramic bowls in the microwave and use a cast iron or stainless cookware so you don’t take risks that aren’t neccessary.

When used indoors under certain conditions, many common household cleaners and air fresheners emit toxic pollutants at levels that may lead to health risks, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Exposure levels to some of the pollutants – and to the secondary pollutants formed when some of the products mix with ozone – may exceed regulatory guidelines when a large surface is cleaned in a small room or when the products are used regularly, resulting in chronic exposure, according to the study.  Again why use them if there is a posibilty it could be causing a problem.  There are a number of commercial non-toxic home cleaning products available, get them and start using them.

My main point is when in doubt find an alternative and safer option.  Technology is great but sometimes we aren’t really sure what the long term affects will be.

Hello world!

Hello and welcome to Toxin Blog.  This blog will mainly focus on education about Toxins that exist in our modern world some obvious, some we may not realize we are exposing ourselves to and the negative impacts these toxins have on our health.

 We will talk about some common sense things you can do to limit your risk.  As well as post information and research that points out risks to be aware of and possible solutions.

 I hope this information proves useful and I hope to post often and welcome discussion on this important topic.  You only have on body and it is prudent to take steps to protect your health and the health of your family.
